Muhlenbergia rigens

Also known as deergrass. Forms dense clumps 2' to 3' tall and equally wide, with narrow and numerous flower stalks that give this species an "op art" look, It is an adaptable, handsome grass making a strong design statement. Likes full sun, and requires warmth for the seed to germinate.

Excellent for erosion control on dry open ground, it is now used in landscaping all over the state. It looks good in masses or as a specimen grass. Broadcast seeding is not recommended - sow in flats or pots for transplanting into the appropriate distances between grasses of two to three feet on center.

It has an unusual distribution in southern California and also in the foothills of the Sierra, leading some to speculate that the indigenous peoples moved it around, since it was important in Ca Indian basketmaking.
