California Quail Sticker by Eli Likover
4"x2" clear edge die-cut sticker
The California quail is an important member of the ecosystem at the Larner Seeds demonstration Garden. We enjoy watching them feast on seeds of California native plants like hayfield tarweed and California fescue. They dart around, taking cover under coyote bush, purple flowering sage, and coffeeberry. We've spotted them indulging in dust baths in the bare soil, and even wood chipped paths. These stickers are an homage to the species and are illustrated by Eli Likover. To see her other creations, check out petalsandclay.com.
The Larner Seeds Display Garden is on land originally designated as a Quail Refuge. Now, most of that land is divided into residential plots. However, the LSDG still remains a refuge for the California Quail.
It's hosted many coveys over the years - this year being no exception. Some of our native shrubs, like Violet-Flowered Lupine (Lupinus propinquus) and Purple Flowering Sage (Salvia leucophylla), provide seed and shelter for the coveys. In fact, California Quail find shelter in most native shrubs- like Coastal Mugwort (Artemisia suksdorfii), California Sagebrush (Artemisia californica), and several others.
