Wyethia mollis, Woolly Mule’s Ears

Wyethia mollis, Woolly Mule’s Ears, is a perennial native to the Sierra from Fresno northward. It grows well in mountain forests, meadows, and sagebrush. It grows during the spring and summer from a taproot to 2ft tall and 3ft wide. In late spring to summer, bright yellow sunflower-like flowers emerge, 3–5 inches across, adding color to its native meadows, forests, rocky slopes, and sagebrush landscapes.

Woolly Mule’s Ears thrives in full sun with afternoon shade, well-drained rocky soil, and areas with cold, snowy winters. It has deep taproots  and is slow-growing.Exceptionally drought tolerant once established, this resilient native is best suited for naturalistic plantings and mountain gardens where it can shine without supplemental watering.

We hope to expand our offerings from the Sierra, and this is a first step in that direction.
