Quercus kellogii, California Black Oak
California Black Oak is named for the striking black bark of the mature tree. Its deeply lobed leaves turn a striking yellow to orange in the fall. This deciduous tree can grow up to 80 ft. tall, with an immense root system once established. Native to coast ranges and the Sierra Nevada, they are often found in serpentine settings. It thrives under part-shade when young and appreciates moderate water once a week in the first year. It requires little moisture and prefers acidic soil with medium drainage, it is adaptable to most sun/shade conditions once established. It is a host plant for butterflies and moths, as well as a vital food source for many creatures, including birds, squirrels, and deer. This gorgeous tree makes for a superb investment in habitat.
It is also well-known for having highly edible acorns. When you receive your acorns, for best planting success immediately place in the fridge for 2-5 months, or cold stratify directly in the ground, keeping them moist for spring germination. Protect from deer for the first few years of growth.
