Lepechinia fragrans, Fragrant Pitcher Sage
There are no words to describe the unique fragrance of the fuzzy leaves of this attractive, drought-tolerant sub-shrub. Smelling the leaves provides a truly Californian experience, one we don’t want to be without. Its large trumpet-shaped purple flowers are set off by its gray-green foliage.
An evergreen shrub in the mint family, it accepts full sun to part shade and takes varied soil. It grows 3-5ft. tall and equally wide. Its leaves have been used for iced tea and are said to treat colds.
Endemic to SoCal, it has done well for us in NoCal. We have also enjoyed growing it in a large decorative container.
