The Larner Seeds Display Garden is on land originally designated as a Quail Refuge. Now, most of that land is divided into residential plots. However, the LSDG still remains a refuge for the California Quail.

It's hosted many coveys over the years - this year being no exception. Some of our native shrubs, like Violet-Flowered Lupine (Lupinus propinquus) and Purple Flowering Sage (Salvia leucophylla), provide seed and shelter for the coveys. In fact, California Quail find shelter in most native shrubs- like Coastal Mugwort (Artemisia suksdorfii), California Sagebrush (Artemisia californica), and several others.

Here in Bolinas, we brake for quail frequently, and we hope you do too. The book entitled The California Quail by A. Starker Leopold is a great resource to learn more about this native bird. It can be found and purchased from our website here.

Eli Likover, a Larner Seeds employee, illustrated and designed this bumper sticker to remind drivers to slow down for wildlife.
