The Naturescaping Workbook; A Step-by-Step Guide for Bringing Nature to Your Backyard
"The Naturescaping Workbook; A Step-by-Step Guide for Bringing Nature to Your Backyard." by Beth O'Donnell Young. Workman Press, $24.95.
Though not focused exclusively on native plants, (they get plenty of play though), this book is an excellent way to plan your own unique "naturescaped" garden. With the design goals of attracting birds and butterflies, reducing maintenance, eliminating pesticides and fertilizers, and creating a backyard retreat, Beth Young provides worksheets and contexts for everything the homeowner could need.
She also points us in some intriguing design directions, such as, through keeping your eyes open for materials that can be repurposed for your own hardscaping. I recently spotted some magnificent pieces of concrete on the side of the road that somebody no longer wants. Apparently, none of the other neighbors had read this book.
